Whitehead Energy Solution: Wet-Location High Bays Cut Energy by More Than 60% Per Fixture

It’s no secret that energy-efficient fluorescent technology can easily replace inefficient high-intensity discharge fixtures—most manufacturers simply trade out HID fixtures for fluorescent high bays. But for a global manufacturer of consumer food products, a harsh environment of food-processing, water, dirt, dust, and temperature extremes limited the applications where energy-saving fixtures could be used.

Whitehead Energy Solutions’ strategic relationships with top-rated lighting manufacturers helped solve this customer’s energy-savings challenge: we replaced several hundred of their 465-watt high bays with our 169-watt, wet-location high bays. We also customized the lighting fixtures to withstand highly-pressurized water with NEMA 4X housings and shatter-resistant lenses, adding a Brad Harrison Mini-Change Connector for a quick-change, water-tight power connection and Shat-R-Shield lamps to protect food products from contaminants. Along with meeting the customer’s unique challenges, we saved them more than 60% per fixture in energy costs—and paved the way for energy-efficient lighting applications for other extreme environments, such as paper and pulp mills, poultry plants, water-treatment facilities, refrigerated storage units, and others.
